Boundary thinking in landscape architecture and boundary-spanning roles of landscape architects

Landscape architects play important roles in addressing societal challenges. To successfully address these challenges, this essay argues that they need to expand their understanding of boundaries and engage boundary thinking. Distinguishing between physical, mental socially constructed boundaries, we characterise thinking as a creative process productive motive designing landscapes. Subsequently, present four types boundary-spanning for landscape perform—the subject-based designer, the visionary narrator, process-based design-led entrepreneur—and point cognitive social capacities needed any roles. We propose architecture consider agenda setting discourses include spanning into practice. suggest three avenues pursue realising professional opportunities: exploring play, environment enables work, developing theory architectural research.
